Nature has an editorial and a number of articles discussing the current state of and fixes to the PhD system. They're mostly concerned with PhDs in science, technology, and engineering but some of the issues discussed are also relevant for the social sciences and humanities. Trigger warning for grad students and recent PhDs: lots of doom and gloom.

The situation in Fukushima is still far from resolved but media attention is declining, as can be seen in the declining number of articles in the major journals.

Nature features a fairly critical interview with the chairman of the World Association of Nuclear Operators, Laurent Stricker. Asked if another disaster could be the end of nuclear power, Sticker replies, "I fear so. Meta-review: Schizophrenia and racism

The publication of Jonathan Metzl's The Protest Psychosis: How Schizophrenia Became a Black Disease has generated a number of reviews. While all reviewers have plenty of praise for his project, there is a discussion about his main argument that the becoming of schizophrenia as a black disease is basically a matter of misdiagnosis because of the psychiatric professions' racism. Some of these reviews rubbed me the wrong way, and this blog post is my attempt in explicating my unease.

Tanya Luhrmann, anthropologists and author of a great ethnography of psychiatric institutions, argues that this argument missing a crucial point: the different rates of prevalence of schizophrenia in different ethnic groups.

If one has a dark skin, one's risk of schizophrenia increases as one's neighborhood whitens, a disturbing finding known as the "ethnic density" effect. The risk of developing schizophrenia among African Caribbeans who have migrated from Jamaica to the United Kingdom is as much as 15 times higher than that among the local whites; the effect holds true for black-skinned Surinamese who have immigrated to the Netherlands.

There is, therefore, a mixture between "being schizophrenic" and "being classified as schizophrenic" in action: Not only are members of racially disadvantaged groups more likely to be diagnosed (Metzl's position; misdiagnosis model); but members of racially disadvantaged groups are more likely to have schizophrenia (Luhrmann's model; racism as risk factor model).

These two explanations are not completely incompatible--Luhrmann clearly acknowledges that misclassification is indeed going on-- but they also don't go together easily. First, if persons from racially disadvantaged groups are indeed at higher risk of having schizophrenia, then one could argue that a higher rate of diagnosis for them just reflects this reality and there is no problem. In this sense, the coming into existence of schizophrenia as a black disorder that Metzl describes could actually be seen as an improvement. Obviously, this is not where Luhrmann and Neely Myers, who reviewed the book on Somatosphere, want to go, but I think this issue has to be addressed.

The underlying ontological and epistemological issue that would help sorting this out is that of the reality of mental illness. Luhrmann's position is based on a position that assumes that schizophrenia exists "out there," without explicating what that schizophrenia is. Is schizophrenia sufficiently defined by its behavioral symptoms listed in the DSM? Is is it an experiential category? Is it a specific kind of "physiology of despair and resilience and [...] individually shaped both genetically and epigenetically," as Neely Myers argues? Aside from this problem, in principle, there is nothing wrong with insisting on the reality of mental disorders, and Luhrmann points out that members of African Caribbean communities in London themselves "attribute their high rates of schizophrenia to the experience of living in poverty with a history of racism and slavery." Dismissing Metzl's misdiagnosis argument as that of a detached liberal academic that doesn't want to acknowledge the devastating effects of poverty and racism appears misguided, though.

Why, for example, do the African Caribbeans mentioned above think of their condition as resulting in schizophrenia and not in terms of a different diagnosis or in non-psychiatric terms? The creation of categories and that of identities go hand in hand, as Ian Hacking has so convincingly argued. Metzl's historical account of the classification of schizophrenia helps us to unravel the creation of an "ecological niche" (Hacking) that not only has allowed psychiatrists to label and institutionalize "angry black men" as schizophrenic, but also allowed disadvantaged communities to think of their social situation in terms of mental disease.[1]

My objections notwithstanding, I think Luhrmann and Myers have pointed out something important when it comes to the conclusions to be drawn from Metzl's analysis. Racism is not merely a matter of the psychiatric profession misdiagnosing certain groups of people. Living in a racist and economically unjust society clearly does something to those affected by it, and dealing only with psychiatry won't make that something go away. To think of the effects of racism primarily in psychiatric terms, however, is no solution either. I hope this debate will continue in a productive manner.

Dimitris Papadopoulos, who was crucial in turning me from a psychology student into an STSer, writes about "Alter-ontologies: Towards a constituent politics in technoscience." After summarizing four approaches to the relation between science and politics -- formalist, participatory, assembly, grounded -- and discussing their problems and shortcomings, Papadopoulos develops the notion of "alter-ontologies" and "constituent politics" as an alternative. Using the case of AIDS activism in the 1980s, Papadopoulos how the creation of new materially grounded "forms of life" based around the notion of justice and emergent forms of everyday experience in the 1980s were a necessary antecedent to the forms of politics focused on expertise and inclusion that Steve Epstein has described. Social History of Medicine reviews a number of interesting books:

David Herzberg reviews Laura Hirshbein's contribution to the history of depression in the US in the 20th century, titled American Melancholy: Constructions of Depression in the Twentieth Century. Much has been written on this topic, but Herzberg points out two specific contributions of Hirshbein: the role of professional psychiatrists in pushing the disease and "new insight into how that expansion gendered depression such that it became a ‘women's disease’." doi:10.1093/shm/hkr015
Christine Leuenberger concludes her review of Paul Stepansky's account of the rise and fall of psychoanalysis over the course of the 20th century as follows: "As an insider and yet an outsider, Stepansky has a unique, rare and valuable perspective on the social history of American psychoanalysis. But his message that psychoanalysis has yet to become a science will not always be welcome. However, if psychoanalysts do not heed this call for change, the profession is likely to end up like railway surgeons and psychological mediums—a footnote to the history of professions." doi:10.1093/shm/hkr016

Metzl's put the psychiatric category of schizophrenia in the context of the Civil Rights Movement and racism and "how anxious responses to the dramatic transformations enacted by the Civil Rights Movement translated into a racist redefinition of schizophrenia as a disease of angry black men." doi:10.1093/shm/hkr027
Gordon Shepherd, himself a prominent neuroscientist and insider to the history he is writing, has written an account of "Creating Modern Neuroscience: The Revolutionary 1950s", reviewed by Charles Gross. Nature has several articles on nuclear energy and the events at Fukushima. Amongst them, Mark Peplow looks a "Chernobyl's legacy," asking if there lessons to be learned from the 25 years of clean-up efforts that can be applied once the immediate emergency in Fukushima has come under control. He also focuses on the research done on the long-term health effects of the Chernobyl disaster. doi:10.1038/471562a
A different research effort on radiation risks was the work done by the Radiation Effects Research Foundation in the aftermath of the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, portrayed by Jocelyn Kaiser for Science. doi:10.1126/science.331.6024.1504
Colin Macilwan questions the judgment of many scientific experts in the aftermath of Fukushima: "the collective impression has been unconvincing: defensive, selective, condescending towards public fears and, in my view, ultimately counterproductive. Their combined message seems to have been: don't worry, things are under control, and Fukushima is not Chernobyl." Macilwan points out three main factors that have contributed to the disaster in Japan, but that are also wide-spread in nuclear power plants around the world: the amassing of several reactors at one site; the inherent safety problems of pressurized-water reactors; and the practice of storing spent fuel rods on-site. doi:10.1038/471549a
Spent fuel rods are also the focus of an analysis in Science. Eli Klintisch is trying to figure out what exactly went on in the storage tanks at the #4 reactor at Fukushima and discusses "concerns about U.S. spent nuclear fuel pools, which are thought to be packed more tightly than those in Europe or Asia." doi:10.1126/science.332.6025.24

The current president of Arizona State University, Michael M Crow, advocates a radical restructuring of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in an article in Nature. He argues that spending 30 billion dollars per year on basic biomedical research is problematic when looking at the limited impact that research has on clinical outcomes and the health of society. Instead of focusing on translational research, Crow suggest that the NIH should be based on three pillars: a "fundamental biomedical systems research institute" that would include sociological, behavioral and environmental perspectives in addition to the typical biomedical sciences; an institute focused on health outcomes, again combining "behavioural sciences, economics, technology, communications and education as well as [...] fundamental biomedical research."; and finally "a 'health transformation' institute, should develop more sustainable cost models by integrating science, technology, clinical practice, economics and demographics." doi:10.1038/471569a
Science has interesting material on and by Steve Wise, founder of the Nonhuman Rights Project. RedRover Secure on Ubuntu 10.04

Cornell's secure wireless network, called RedRover Secure, unfortunately only comes with instructions for Windows and MacOS systems. There is a wiki page describing how to use RedRover Secure on Linux, but unfortunately those instructions are quite outdated. Nonetheless, they helped me set up the network on my Ubuntu 10.04 netbook and I wanted to share the solution which is actually fairly easy.

If you haven't done so already, in order to download the required security certificates, you should connect to the normal RedRover network.
Download the compressed archive with the certificates from here. In case the files are no longer available, you should be able to find them linked on the instruction page for installation of the certificates on MacOS.
Unzip the two files to a location of your choice.
Now you're ready to connect: Choose RedRover Secure in the network manager and the following window will appear:
The required settings are:
- Wireless Security: WPA & WPA Enterprise
- Authentication: Tunneled TLS
- Anonmymous Identity: [blank]
- CA Certificate: Choose the ThawtePremiumServerCA.cer file that you extracted in the previous step
- Inner Authentication: PAP
- Username: [your NetID]

How to: Embedding maps with a GPS track and geotagged photos

I spent a better part of yesterday evening to figure out how to embed a map that includes a GPX track and geotagged pictures on my blog for creating ride reports. So far I had used GPSies convenient embedding feature; yet that only shows the track itself and no photos. Or so I thought. In the end, I figured out two different ways to achieve what I want, all with some advantages and disadvantages. What they have in common is that they first require you to embed geodata into the images' meta-data (commonly known as "geotagging").

Getting geodata into your images

Let's start with the theory. You have to connect the geodata with the images. If you don't have a fancy new camera/mobile phone that has a GPS receiver already built-in and if you don't want to do it manually in Picasa/Google Earth or on flickr, you will do this by matching time stamps. The idea is that your images include the time when they were taken and you can then take the GPS track and, as it were, look up that time stamp and see which location it matches.

To illustrate this principle, think of a train journey: you were traveling through the country by train and, because you're a railway buff, you took pictures of some of the stations on the way. You had planned to write down where you took which picture in your notebook; but because you got carried away by the excitement about some of the trains and station buildings you forgot about that. Is everything lost now? No, not at all. Because your photos' metadata includes the time when they were taken, you can just look at the timetable of your train and match the time of the image with the schedule of the train and figure out where you were when. (For this to work, the train, of course, has to be on time. More on that later.)

No back to your actual ride pictures: While you could do the connecting between image time and location data manually (just open the gpx-file in a text editor, look up the matching time/location, and then write the location into the images metadata), this would be very cumbersome, especially if you have a lot of pictures. Fortunately, there's software out there to help you. I recommend GPicSync for the task. It's a free, open source tool and in addition to geotagging your images, it has a couple of additional functions that will be helpful for the later steps in creating your embedded maps.

Basic geotagging in GPicSync is relatively straight-forward. Choose the folder in which you have the images to be geotagged, choose the folder containing the GPS track and then click "Synchronise". However, chances are good that this is not going to work right away, and this brings me back to the train analogy. I've pointed out that matching images to stations on the timetable only works if the train is actually on time. For your pictures this means that your GPS devices' and your camera's time has to be in sync. There are two potential problems: first, there is the problem of the time coding. Most GPS devices save the time in the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) format. For our purposes, we can assume that UTC is the same as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Cameras, on the other hand, often save the time in the local time to which you have set it. So if you're on the US east coast and you take a picture at noon (local time), your camera will probably time-stamp the image with 12:00, while your GPS will have the correct location time-stamped with 17:00 (Daylight Savings Time complicates this further). This, obviously, is a problem for GPicSync, as it can't know which time format each device is using. Thus, you have to manually enter the UTC off-set.

Figuring out this value can be a bit confusing, but in many cases it's enough to figure out the time difference between your time zone and GMT. E.g., if you're in the Eastern Standard Time zone that would be -5, for Central European Time it would be +1, etc.. Fortunately, GPicSync will not synchronise your images if the time difference between the GPS and image data is larger than 300 seconds, thereby preventing most errors of this kind.

The second dimension to the off-set problem lies in the small differences between GPS and camera time. While a GPS device's time is always accurate (it gets the time from the satellites), your camera might be a couple of minutes off. Because your speed on the bike in general is not very high, this probably won't matter too much. But if you care about accuracy, the easiest way to deal with the problem is to take a picture of your GPS device's time display at the beginning of each ride. This allows you to determine exactly how big the offset between the two is and you can correct for it in GPicSync. E.g., if you're on the east coast and your camera is 15 minutes ahead of the GPS, you'd enter -4.75 as the value for the offset (15 minutes = 0.25 hours).

Okay, I've made this unnecessarily complicated: I just figured out that GPicSync has a special function for correcting time offset not related to time zones: Just go to Options > Local Time Correction and enter the respective values. Way easier than calculating the decimal value yourself.

If you've done all that correctly, GPicSync will write the correct geo-tags into your images meta-data. Now we can focus on the second step -- displaying a map, your track, and the images on a web page.

GPSies + Picasa

Upload your track on GPSies.com.
Upload your now geo-tagged images to a Picasa web album. Make sure that the album is public! In the right column of your album's page you should see a little map with place markers for all your images.
In the "Edit track" function on your ride's GPSies page, go to "Manage pictures/video".
Enter your Picasa user name and the name of the album and click "save".
If you now view the track, all the images should be correctly placed on the map. And at the very bottom of the page, you'll find the IFRAME code to embed your map on your webpage. Just like here:

While this method is pretty simple, it has one major downside: if you've taken several pictures at the same location, the map will only show you one of them. The alternative is to create your own map with the help of Google Maps. But this will be subject of another post. Please leave a comment if you found this tutorial useful or have questions!

Zotero and DOI grabbing

Zotero has an ever growing wealth of great features that remain somewhat hidden due to a lack of documentation and showcasing. Via a tweet from Trevor Owens I recently discovered that if any webpage contains a DOI, Zotero allows you to import that document's metadata automatically into your library. So if you're, for example, blogging about a journal article that you've just found, you should include its DOI and your readers will be able to grab that article without even going to its web page. If you want to test this feature, just check out your awesomebar: It should have the Zotero grab icon and clicking on it should import the metadata for an article about "Ethical variability". The only downside of this feature is that it can be a bit confusing: normally you'd expect Zotero to import metadata for the current page (or the item that the current page refers to), in this case: my blog post. But this is only a minor issue.

Sandra Harding: Can women ever become modern?

Eine seit vielen Jahre führende Vertreterin von feministischer und postkolonialer Wissenschaftsphilosophie ist Sandra Harding. Die Autorin von Büchern wie "The Science Question in Feminism", "Whose Science, whose Knowledge?" und "Is Science Multicultural?" hielt am 10. Juli eine öffentliche Vorlesung an der TU Berlin. (Ankündigungstext)

Die den Vortrag leitende Frage war, ob "Frauen jemals modern werden können?" Die übliche Antwort, dass westliche Frauen schon lange in der Moderne angekommen seien und es nur eine Frage der Zeit wäre, bis sich alle Frauen sozusagen modernisiert hätten, ließ Harding nicht gelten. Bevor sie jedoch ihre vier Argumente gegen diese Antwort vorbrachte, machte sie einige allgemeinere Bemerkungen zur Fragestellung selbst.

Vor allem die Definition von "modern" oder "Moderne" ist für Harding ein ungelöstes Problem. Unter Verweis auf eine Sonderausgabe der Zeitschrift Daedalus [1] vertrat Harding die These, dass es die Moderne nicht gäbe, sondern man stattdessen von "Multiple Modernities" sprechen müsse. Moderne lässt sich entweder zeitlich oder über ihre Substanz definieren. Die erstere Möglichkeit führt dazu, dass unterschiedliche Disziplinen und unterschiedliche Sprachgruppen jeweils verschiedene Periodisierungen vornehmen. In Philsophie und (Natur-)Wissenschaft etwa liegt die Grenze zwischen Vormoderne und Moderne im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert, also der Zeit von Descartes, Boyle und Bacon, die einen Bruch mit den Traditionen des "dunklen Mittelalters" ermöglicht hätten. In den Sozialwissenschaften hingegen fällt die Grenze mit der Urbanisierung und der zweiten industriellen Revolution im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert gezogen. In Kunst, Literatur und Ästhetik schließlich beginnt die Moderne erst im späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert (und, so sollte man ergänzen, ist auch schon seit einiger Zeit wieder passé). Aus diesem Befund und der Tatsache, dass etwa im Französichen die genannten Grenzen noch einmal anders gezogen werden, leitete Harding ab, dass der shared core der Definition von Moderne klein sei und im Wesentlichen aus der Figur des Großen Bruchs mit der Vergangenheit bestünde. Inhaltlich geht es um eine Orientierung auf die Zukunft hin, universelle Vernunft, die Ablösung der gesellschaftlichen Institutionen von der Familie, ein Verschwinden der als negativ bewerteten Tradition und der Festellung, dass es nur eine Moderne, und zwar die des Westens gebe.

Jenseits der definitorischen Schwierigkeiten stellen sich für Harding vier inhaltliche Einwände gegen die Moderne.

Erstens fragt sie, vom wem die traditionelle Arbeit in modernen Gesellschaften geleistet werde. Damit verweist sie auf eine verhältnismäßig machtvolle Stellung von Frauen innerhalb des Haushaltes in vormodernen Gesellschaften. Durch die oben erwähnte Ablösung von gesellschaftlichen Institutionen von denen der Familie und damit auch der physischen Abtrennung der Arbeit im Haushalt wird die Position der Frau in der Gesellschaft geschwächt. Funktionierende Haushalte sind die Vorbedingung der Existenz moderner Gesellschaften, was aber von diesen, etwa durch den Staat oder die Ökonomie, nicht anerkannt wird. Mit "Vorbedingung" meint Harding nicht allein, dass in den Haushalten im Marx'schen Sinne unbezahlte Reproduktionsarbeit geleistet wird, sondern der Haushalt ermöglicht moderne Gesellschaft in einem weiteren Sinne: Da "Moderne" in erster Linie eine Anhäufung abstrakter Ideen sei, wäre es notwendig, diese in die materielle Umwelt "einzunähen", sie zu übersetzen -- und dies geschehe zu einem beträchtlichen Teil im Haushalt über die dort geleistete traditionelle "craft labor".

Der zweite Einwand betrifft das Entwicklungsnarrativ der Modernen: Um modern zu werden, mussten sie "das Weibliche und das Wilde/Primitive/Nicht-Westliche" mittels wissenschaftlicher Rationalität und technischer Expertise überwinden und alle Verbindungen mit diesem kappen. In einem zivilisatorischen Evolutionsnarrativ erscheinen Frauen und Nicht-Westliche als noch in der Kindheit der Spezies Verbliebene, und vorhandene Machthierarchien von "male supremacy and European supremacy" leben ineinander verschlungen fort.

Der dritte Einwand Harding richtet sich gegen die Behauptung, dass die Moderne die Tradition ersetzt. Dem stellt sie die These entgegen, dass die Moderne vielmehr selektiv bestimmte Elemente der Tradition aufrecht erhält, wiederbelebt, umgestaltet. Dies kann einerseits durch den bereits angedeuteten Vorgang des Othering sein, in dem die Tradition als Negativfolie oder Drohkulisse dient; es kann aber auch konkreter die im ersten Einwand angesprochene Beibehaltung vormoderner Strukturen im Haushalt oder der Ökonomie (Sweat shop economies, Haushaltsarbeit, Baugewerbe, Pflege etc.) sein.

Der vierte und letzte Einwand schließlich beruht wieder auf der Multiplizität von Moderne. Die Modernen verstehen sich selbst in exzeptionalistischen und triumphalistische Begriffen: "We are the only ones who managed to become modern. We owe nothing to traditional societies. And if something has gone wrong, it's not the fault of modern society or science itself but, for example, bad politics abusing neutral science and technology." Diese Sichtweise lässt sich laut Harding zum einen aus (wissenschafts-)geschichtlicher Perspektive, die sich auf Vorläuferinnen und Kontinuitäten zwischen Vormoderne und Moderne konzentriert, kritisieren. Zum zweiten vernachlässigt der Exzeptionalismus, der nur die eine Moderne des Westens sieht, die Tatsache, dass alle Gesellschaften auf die eine oder andere Weise modern geworden sind, indem sie auf spezifische Weise die Ideen der Moderne in spezifische Kontexte "eingenäht" haben -- etwa die Verbindung von Hindu-Nationalismus und Modernisierung im dekolonialisierten Indien. "No society can escape modernity."

Was sind nun Hardings Schlussfolgerungen aus all dem? Trotz ihrer Kritik an den Modernen und ihrer Sicht auf sich selbst, betont sie, dass die Dichotomie von Tradition und Moderne die Welt weiterhin zu einem großen Maß strukturiert. Auch und gerade die Natur- wie Sozialwissenschaften fußen auf eben dieser Trennung und seien deswegen im Kampf für nicht-moderne Verhältnisse problematische Bündnispartnerinnen. Soziale Transformation könne nur das Resultat eines gemeinsamen Projekts von Feminismus und Postkolonialismus sein. Die leitende Frage sollte dabei dann nicht sein, ob Frauen je modern werden können, sondern wie eine Moderne aussehen würde, wenn sie vom Standpunkt von Frauen aus aller Welt und allen Schichten gestaltet werden würde. Mögliche Antwortden auf diese Frage ließ Harding -- leider -- offen.

Ich will zum Abschluss zwei Kritikpunkte an Hardings Argumentation anbringen. Wie sie selbst mehrere Male betonte, ist Harding in erster Linie Philosophin und keine Sozialwissenschaftlerin. Dies (so vermute ich jedenfalls) führte dazu, dass ihre Kritik auf einer global-abstrakten Ebene angesiedelt war, die einerseits wenig Neues brachte und andererseits in ihrer Allgemeinheit auch schwer kritisierbar ist. Gerade angesichts der Tatsache, dass sie sowohl die Definition von Moderne als auch deren Selbstsicht als etwas Homogenes kritisierte, erschien ihr eigenes Reden über die Moderne als seltsam vereinheitlichend. Aussagen wie "Die (westliche) Moderne ist ...", "Die (westliche) Moderne beruht auf ..." sind zu allgemein und lassen zudem die Frage nach Verantwortlichkeit und Handlungsmächtigkeit/Agency offen.

Ein weiterer problematischer Punkt ist Hardings zumindest auf den ersten Blick so erscheinende unkritische Bewertung des Vor-, oder besser: Nicht-Modernen. In der anschließenden Diskussion fragte eine Zuhörerin etwa nach der unbestreitbar vorhandenen Gewalt im von Harding als Raum des weiblichen Einflusses gepriesenen Haushalt. Harding unterstützte diese Sichtweise; aber dennoch ließ ihre Antwort unklar, inwieweit ihr Argument sich auf reale historische, gegenwärtige oder utopische Haushalte bezieht.

Vielleicht lassen sich ja die Antworten auf diese Fragen und Kritikpunkte in Hardings neuem Buch, "Sciences from Below: Feminisms, Postcolonialities, and Modernities: Feminisms, Postcolonialisms, and Modernities", finden.

I don't really have any intention on talking about my blogging absence. Let it suffice that I haven't been blogging for a while, am now blogging again, but can give no guarantees about the future.

Maybe it's a rather lousy occasion to get back into posting but I'm really excited to hear that Gmail has started implementing free IMAP support! I am not one of the lucky ones who already have the option available to them but I'm sure it won't take too long. I really love Gmail's web-interface but for things like encryption (Do! Encrypt! As! Many! Of! Your! Messages! As! You! Can!) a client like Thunderbird is still necessary/handy. Unfortunately, having only POP access to my mail over the client sometimes made things more complicated than they should be. Just a couple of days ago the problem occurred that someone had sent me an attachment from his Mac and I wasn't able to open or download it properly over the web interface. Thunderbird worked fine; however, when I needed access to the file again, from another computer, of course it had already been marked as "read" and therefore wouldn't download. I guess I could have used some workaround but IMAP would have definitely made things easier.

So hooray for Gmail IMAP.

Your flickr pro-account account will expire on June 28...

Mer, my much beloved flickr has failed me, now for the second time. While I swallowed the obligation to associate my flickr-account with a Yahoo!-ID (Yahoo! acquired flickr in 2005), the recent change of terms of service that blocks content for users from certain countries is really pissing me off. I am well aware that this is by no means only flihoo's fault but rather a case of overcautious interpretation by company lawyers of stupid (German) laws. What is even worse than this mild form of censorship, however, is Yahoo!'s policy of cooperating with repressive regimes (no, I don't mean Germany) in prosecuting dissidents. I do acknowledge that any company must to a certain comply with local laws to a certain extent if it wants to stay in business. But, maybe in a similar fashion to the overcompliance to German regulations, Yahoo! has apparently shown absolutely no willingness to protect its users from the Chinese authorities. This has also become clear in last week's rejection of a proposed anti-censorship policy by Yahoo!'s shareholders.

What is to be done?

All this leads me to the conclusion that I'm not willing to renew my subscription for another year, for two main reasons. First, I don't want to give money to a corporation that does the things that I've mentioned above. Second, and maybe more important, I don't want to be stuck with flihoo for a whole year. Who knows what will come next!? Maybe you're asking yourself why the second reason is the more important one. Well, as a good Adornite I am well aware that “there is no right life in falsehood” and that the idea of making capitalism better by consumer choices is a burgeois illusion. I readily admit: I have Continental tires on my bike, I drink Starbucks coffee, I buy at Lidl. Therefore, it doesn't make a big difference if Yahoo! will get my 25 bucks or not. But paying 25 bucks for a product that might get drastically worse within the subscription period, with no chance of getting your money back, seems like a bad decision.

Unfortunately, there are a number of problems with leaving flihoo: flickr is not just some consumer product but it is a social network. Telepolis has an interesting article (German only) on how it becomes virtually impossible to switch from one network to another since this virtually means that your network disappears---my contacts, my comments, my favorites, my groups are all at flickr and not at ipernity, zoomr, 23hq or wherever. In addition, most of the alternative services simply suck when compared to flickr. Ipernity in my experience is the one closest to flickr but that's mainly because it is a very blunt knock-off, apparently even using “stolen” code.

So, in the end, what is to be done? I think I'll just wait and see. Flickr will deactivate the pro-features after the subscription ends but they can be re-activated at any time if flihoo will come to its senses.

Okay, this year's International Women's Day is almost over (at least in my time zone) and I don't really have time to write something insightful. However, I am sure you'll find lots of interesting contributions over at the taking place blog that celebrates the second edition of the Blog Against Sexism Day. Hopefully, next year I'll be able to participate again, and until then I can only say: Let's celebrate the past accomplishments of feminism and then continue our struggle for true equality!

Seufz, der Weltfrauentag ist – zumindest in dieser Zeitzone – schon fast wieder vorbei, und ich habe echt keine Zeit, etwas Tiefsinniges zu schreiben. Das ist aber nicht so schlimm, da man sowohl in der heutigen taz (sage ich das wirklich??) als auch drüben beim taking place blog veranstalteten, zweiten Blog-Against-Sexism-Tag einen Haufen guter Beiträge finden kann. Insofern bleibt mir also nur noch einen guten Frauentag zu wünschen, an dem man die bisherigen Errungenschaften feiern sollte, um dann wieder gestärkt unseren gemeinsamen Kampf um wahre Gleichberechtigung weiterführen zu können.

According to a survey commissioned by the public broadcasting program “ARD Morgenmagazin”, 24% of all Germans think that the police should be allowed to use any means at their disposal to fight crime. The survey was conducted in the aftermath of the Bundesgerichtshof's decision to declare covert online searches of private computers illegal. I'm deeply skeptical about surveys in general, and more so as in this instance the exact questions and answer choices haven't been made public. But, unfortunately, I don't think that the numbers are in any way unlikely to reflect the opinion of a large part of the population. Sigh.

Eine Umfrage im Auftrag des ARD-Morgenmagazins ergab, dass 24% der Deutschen der Meinung sind, dass es der Polizei erlaubt sein sollte, zur Verbrechensbekämpfung alle ihr zur Verfügung stehenden Mittel zu nutzen. Die Umfrage wurde im Kontext der Entscheidung des Bundesgerichtshofs über die Unzulässigkeit verdeckter Online-Durchsuchungen von Privatcomputern durchgeführt. Ich bin gegenüber Umfrageergebnissen stets sehr skeptisch, vor allem, wenn wie in diesem Fall die genauen Fragen und die Antwortmöglichkeiten nicht veröffentlicht werden. Aber leider halte ich die 24% für alles andere als unwahrscheinlich. Seufz.

Die heimliche Durchsuchung privater Festplatten durch Ermittlungsbehörden wurde vom Bundesgerichtshof für illegal erklärt. Dass das dem Oberschnüffler Schäuble nicht passt, war natürlich schon zu erwarten. Also erst einmal ein vorläufiges Aufatmen; das dicke Ende wird schon noch kommen.

Covert searches of your private hard disk remain illegal in Germany for now. The Bundesgerichtshof, second highest federal court, ruled today that there is no legal basis for such actions. However, our minister of the interior, Wolfgang Schäuble, who is very unhappy about the decision, of course already has plans to create the appropriate laws. Somehow I can't really feel relieved...

Capitalism is alive and well

David Harvey hat in seinem kürzlich erschienenen Buch “A Brief History of Neoliberalism” (Review folgt) die Kommodifizierung, also die Herstellung von Warenförmigkeit, immer weiterer Bereiche als ein wesentliches Kennzeichen des Neoliberalismus ausgemacht. Dies gilt nicht zuletzt für den Umweltschutz, wo der Emissionshandel sicher ein paradigmatischer Fall ist. Wie dies nun in der Praxis aussehen kann, schildert ein Artikel in der Telepolis. In Kurzform: Die Weltbank kauft Emissionszertifikate für 1.000.000.000 USD und investiert die Hälfte davon in Anlagen zur Verbrennung von HFC-23. HFC-23 ist ein höchst klimaschädliches Gas, das bei der Herstellung von HFC-22, einem Kühlmittel, entsteht. Ergebnis: Die Produzentinnen von HFC-22 machen einen großen Reibach, da allein schon der Handel mit der Weltbank die Produktion rentabel. David Harvey describes the commodification of ever more things as a main feature of neoliberalism. With respect to protection of the environment the trade of certificates for greenhouse gases would constitute a paradigmatic case. The absurd consequences that this kind of commodification can have in practice is described in an article [google translation] in Telepolis. In short: the World Bank spends 1,000,000,000 USD to buy emission certificates. Half of is spent to burn HFC-23, a gas with severe effects on the climate. HFC-23 is a by-product of the manufacturing of HFC-22, a gas used in air conditioners. Result: the producers of HFC-22 make looots of money, as the World Bank money alone makes HFC-22 production profitable, and, of course, increase production. And the cost for destroying HFC-23 by way of certificates is way above what it would cost if it would be financed directly. Long live capitalism!

Knuth gestolpert, dem Erfinder meines Lieblingstextsatzsystems (La)TeX und einem der bedeutendsten Computerwissenschaftler überhaupt. Ein Satz, den man aus jedem nächstbesten Krimi kennt, der aber auch der Titel des Vortrag von Rechtsanwalt Udo Vetter auf dem 23C3 ist. In seinem Vortrag, der inzwischen bei GoogleVideo verfügbar ist, gibt er einen Überblick über das richtige Verhalten, wenn man Opfer einer Hausdurchsuchung wird. Vetter betreibt auch das Lawblog, und sein Vortrag zeichnet sich durch Verständlichkeit für Nicht-JuristInnen und einen guten Schuss Humor aus. Vermutlich aus Zeitgründen geht Vetter nur auf die strafrechtlichen Aspekte sogenannter Internetkriminalität ein, nicht jedoch auf die privatrechtlichen, in denen die juristischen Rahmenbedingungen sich teilweise deutlich unterscheiden.

Here comes an update on the scary news about police/secret service crackers. There have been two major developments since my last post.

First, Mr. Wolf, minister of the interior of North-Rhine Westfalia (NRW) and member of the so-called "liberal" party FDP, managed to get a law through parliament that allows the Verfassungsschutz, the secret service of the interior, to attack private computers and conduct covert online searches. The FDP and the Christian Democrats form the NRW government and have a comfortable majority in the NRW parliament. The opposition parties, social democrats and the green party, did vote against the law but it seems that the only way to stop it is a constitutional complaint filed by civil rights activist and journalist Twister.

Fortunately, there is not only bad news about privacy rights. A judge of the Bundesgerichtshof, the second highest court in Germany, rejected to sign a request to conduct exactly what I have described above. Apparently there already have been four cases in which law enforcement agencies got judicial approval for internet-based cracking attacks on private computers (they all failed for technical reasons) before Judge Ulrich Hebenstreit realized that these measures have no legal foundation. The attorney general has challenged this decision and thus we have to wait and see how the story will turn out. Even if Hebenstreit's decision will hold this is no big relief. As stated in my previous post, federal minister of the interior Schäuble is very eager to create the legal foundation for what is now only a nightmare. And even if law enforcement agencies at the moment might not have the technical means to intrude on your computer this is only a question of time—a few weeks ago Schäuble managed to get 132 million Euros (174 million USD) for measure to improve on- and offline surveillance.

I must say that I am really scared.

Nach längerer Zeit gibt es mal wieder eine Rezension in der Luftpumpenwelt. Zwar nicht von einem tiefschürfenden, intellektuellen Klopper, sondern vielmehr von einem Comic. Ich bin eigentlich kein großer Freund des Comics und deswegen mit dem Genre auch nicht sonderlich vertraut, aber folgendes Exemplar seiner Gattung ist definitiv eine Besprechung wert.

Seit mittlerweile mehr als vier Jahren zeichnet Andreas Michalke für meine Lieblingswochenzeitung Jungle World den Strip Bigbeatland. Während die übrigen Comics dort irgendwo zwischen „öfters mal lustig“ (OL) bis zu „wirr, rassistisch, überflüssig“ (Lili und Poldi) rangieren, ist das Bigbeatland eine wahre Perle. Michalke versteht es hervorragend, die linke Berliner Lebenswelt, in der ich selbst ja auch irgendwie herumdümpele, abzubilden, zu kommentieren und auf eine mitfühlend-kritische Art satirisch zu überzeichnen. Figuren
wie der ganz in grau gehaltene Altkommunist „Subkommandante Markus“, die beiden Musicnerds Sandro und Johnny, die stets betonen, Rock- und eben keine Poplinken zu sein, oder die Hardcore-Feministin Fricka (deren Figur im Laufe der Serie leider etwas flacher geworden ist) könnten einem hier in jedem Infoladen oder auf der nächstbesten Soliparty genau so über den Weg laufen. Michalke kreiert in seinen Strips einerseits ein eigenes kleines Biotop, andererseits flicht er aber auch aktuelle politische Ereignisse mit ein, wie etwa den ewigen Anti-D vs. Anti-Imp-Kampf oder die Durchsuchung des Hamburger freien Radios fsk. Ein weiteres großes Plus ist, dass Michalke einen exzellenten (= meinem eigenen sehr ähnlichen) Musikgeschmack hat und immer mal wieder ganze Strips nur einer einzigen Band oder einem Song widmet. Höhepunkt in dieser Hinsicht war die Bigbeatland-Folge, in der Sandro und Johnny als Comicfiguren die Band R.A.M.B.O. bei ihrem Berlin-Auftritt interviewten.

Das Buch ist qualitativ sehr hochwertig aufgemacht, komplett in Farbe und mit einem Vorwort vom großen Diedrich Diederichsen ausgestattet.

Wer für seine linken Freundinnen und Freunde — oder sich selbst — also noch ein Weihnachtsgeschenk sucht, dem sei Bigbeatland sehr ans Herz gelegt.

Nazis sind nicht nur doof und gefährlich, nein, sie haben in der Regel auch einen furchtbaren Musikgeschmack. Im aktuellen Freitag gibt es nun ein interessantes Interview mit Michael Weiss vom Antifaschistischen Pressearchiv und Bildungszentrum Berlin, in dem er ausführlich auf aktuelle Entwicklungen in der rechten Musikszene eingeht. Großkonzerte seien aufgrund des Repressionsdrucks im Zurückgehen begriffen, während es bei kleinen Konzerten mit bis zu 120 Besucherinnen und Besuchern einen klaren Aufschwung gebe. Weiss betont die Notwendigkeit einer analytischen Trennung zwischen rechter, extrem rechter und neonazistischer Musik -- ein Spektrum, das für ihn bei Rammstein und den Böhsen Onkelz beginnt und bei Death in June oder Landser endet. Dass nicht alle, die entsprechende Musik hören, automatisch ein geschlossen rechtsextremes Weltbild haben, sollte offensichtlich sein. Weiss ist aber der Meinung, dass es der rechten Szene immer mehr gelungen sei, rechte Codes in die Alltagskultur zu überführen, was dann dazu führen kann, dass eine linke Punkband von "ZOG", der "zionistisch besetzten Regierung" singt und glaubt, damit etwas gegen den Kapitalismus zu sagen.

Mein Vater hat mich nun darauf hingewiesen, dass es einmal wohl nicht nur eine -- mehr oder minder -- harmlose Schlägerei im Wild at Heart oder der Bar 11 war. An Genaueres aus dem Abendschau-Bericht konnte er sich nicht erinnern, aber der Presseticker der Pozilei hilft:

We aim at founding the "Pirate Party Germany". It shall preserve freedom of speech and privacy of all people in Germany, and reformulate the anti-progressive excesses of copyright and patent law, in favor of a free knowledge society.

As heise online reports, the German branch of the growing movement of pirate parties has been founded yesterday. The party program is still rather rudimentary but its basic claims seem to be very much in accordance with what I propagate in this blog. I think I will definitely check out one of their real life or online conventions.

Documenting vs experiencing

Spiegel Online features an article (German only) about yesterday's Non Photography Day. On their website the people behind it (according to Spiegel Online the photographer Becca Bland) explain the idea behind the day:

Non- photography day is an effort on my part to revive the moment by putting down the camera. It is a day to think about how life exists, in essence and not appearance and to understand the inadequacy of the photograph in describing this essence, to bring awareness of the perils of living through the view finder or the display screen…

Some thoughts about the issue: I have often thought about how seeing the world as a photographer changes your perception and your experience. I think it is important to keep these two levels apart: with respect to perception I see photography as a way to enhance the ways you see your environment. To have the photographic awareness, as it were, makes you turn your head around, not just look straight, it motivates you to look behind the corner, open that door, lie on the floor, walk behind the waterfall, or take the stairs instead of the elevator.

On the level of experience I somehow agree with Bland's criticism (though not with her essentialist, romanticist vernacular). The influence of taking photos usually becomes most apparent to me when I go to protests (or read about protests on indymedia) or on concerts. With the former you often get the impression that there are more people shooting pictures than people interested in the original purpose of the protest. While it is important to document police violence and to publish pictures of a rally that otherwise might not get any media attention, I often have the impression that "documenting" becomes an end in itself. And seeing yourself as the "documentalist" distances you from the protest and its aims.

On concerts -- usually hardcore shows in my case -- it seems similar. The tradition of documenting itself seems to be very widespread among subcultures. You have fanzines, people with large collections of video and audio bootlegs, and nowadays websites with often hundreds of pictures. Again: this is great and useful -- just consider what the great documentary about the rise of modern skateboarding in the 70s, Dogtown and Z-Boys. The plethora of Super-8 and other video material that they have been able to use is amazing and I suppose it had been mostly shot by the actors themselves. But when you try and be in the role of the person behind the photo or video camera or at the audio recorder yourself you quickly realize what a different experience it is than if you were in the moshpit: you have to protect your camera, you can't dance, band and audience become an object apart from you. This last point, in my opinion, points at something that the initiators of the Non-Photo-Day have failed to consider: not only is it the photographer on whom seeing herself in this role might have problematic aspects but also the objects of photography might influenced in ways that are not desirable. The awareness that you are being filmed, that pictures of you will soon be available to anyone on the internet certainly influences both your experience and behavior. In what direction is an open question -- maybe you want to be the "hero" of the documentary and burn that flag, make that audacious dance move that you practiced in front of the mirror, or be a first-time stagediver. But maybe you'll become inhibited, self-conscious, avoiding anything that might make you the center of attention of all those cam people.

So, my dear photographers: Continue to take your pics, on July 17 and the rest of the year! But think about what having a camera between you and others does to you and does to others. And know when it is time to put away the cam and jump off the stage, protect your fellow protesters, or just enjoy a marvelous scenery.

Die Eröffnung

Um meiner Funktion als WM-2006-Blog etwas mehr gerecht zu werden, gibt es hier nun einen Beitrag zur Eröffnungsfeier. Die ARD hat freundlicherweise die genaue Planung dieser online verfügbar gemacht, aber leider einen wichtigen Akteur vergessen -- mich. Nicht so schlimm, das kann ich ja an dieser Stelle einfach beheben:

16.30 Uhr: Die "jungen Riederinger Musikanten" ziehen auf einem prächtig
geschmückten Wagen ein, Heuhaufen werden auf das Spielfeld gerollt. 150
Schuhplattler betreten das Stadion. Von beiden Seiten laufen kräftige
Gestalten mit großen Schellen ein.

16.31 Uhr: Harald windet sich in heftigen Spasmen vor dem Fernseher, da
er aus Versehen von Angler-TV auf die WM-Eröffnung umgeschaltet hat.
Verzweifelt versucht er, die Fernbedienung zu erreichen, aber bei jedem
neuen Auftritt einer Trachten- oder HipHop-Gruppe verkrampft er erneut.

16.32 Uhr: Die Schellenführer beginnen mit ihrem ohrenbetäubenden
Vortrag. Nebelschwaden steigen auf, und der Musikantenwagen verwandelt
sich in eine Bühne.

16.33 Uhr: Harald ruft verzweifelt um Hilfe, aber seine Schreie werden
vom Krach der Schellenführer übertönt.

16.51 Uhr: Herbert Grönemeyer singt die offizielle FIFA-Hymne "Zeit,
dass sich was dreht" auf Deutsch und Englisch. Zum Ende des
Grönemeyer-Songs öffnen sich unter den Röcken der Frauen, die immer noch
hoch über der Fläche schweben, verborgene Taschen und es ergießt sich
ein Konfetti-Regen. Von den Seiten kommen Flaggenträger, die die 32
Flaggen der teilnehmenden Nationen tragen.

16.52 Uhr: Die Lage von Harald hat sich immer noch nicht gebessert. Die
unzähligen Nationalflaggen brennen sich unerbittlich auf seiner Netzhaut
ein. Er verspürt den unbändigen Drang, die deutsche Nationalhymne zu
singen -- nein: schreien!, aber ihm fallen immer nur die Worte
"Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" ein.

16.55 Uhr: Der Auszug der Musiker beginnt. Bühne und Teppich werden
abgebaut.

16.56 Uhr: Die Krämpfe lassen langsam nach. Harald erreicht endlich die
Fernbedienung und kann wieder zu Rotbarschen, Fliegenfischen und den
schönsten Angelspots der Welt umschalten.

Wenn man mit anderen über die Regeln des Urheberrechts spricht, zeigt sich oft eine ziemliche Unkenntnis dessen, was erlaubt ist und was nicht. Allerdings nicht in die Richtung, dass die Leute ein zu laxes Verständnis haben, sondern vielmehr das Gegenteil: Vielen ist es in der Praxis zwar recht egal, ob etwas legal ist oder nicht, aber dennoch haben sie ein schlechtes Gewissen oder zumindest ein Unrechtsbewusstsein bei Dingen, die (noch...) legal sind. Insofern scheint die Propaganda der Contentindustrie ja sehr erfolgreich zu sein. Da ich in solchen Diskussionen dann teilweise selbst unsicher werde, ob ich wirklich recht habe, wollte ich an dieser Stelle auf die hervorragende Seite irights.info hinweisen.

Die für den diesjährigen Grimme Online Award nominierte Seite klärt ausführlich und verständlich darüber auf, was erlaubt und was verboten/zweifelhaft ist. Nicht nur erfährt man, ob man MP3-Streams aus dem Netz aufzeichnen (ja) oder Bootlegs von Konzerten anfertigen darf (i. d. R. nein), sondern auch Informationen über das Samplen von Musikschnipseln, die Verwendung von Zitaten in Off- und Online-Medien, das Modifizieren von Computerspielen und noch einiges mehr.

A quick update on the debate about no-go areas for people of color in Germany: the former spokesman of the red-green government, Uwe-Karsten Heye, who is now head of the anti-racist organization Gesicht zeigen! (Show our face!) has also advised caution for non-white visitors of Germany--and quickly withdrawn his remarks. In an interview with the public radio station Deutschlandradio Kultur he said:

There are small and medium-sized towns in Brandenburg, as well as elsewhere, which I would advise anyone of another skin colour to avoid going to. It is possible he wouldn't get out alive.

He was heavily criticized for these remarks and withdrew them to a certain extent, expecially making clear the he didn't want to single out Brandenburg. Die Zeit, a German quality weekly, features an article about the image of Germans around the world at the eve of the Soccer World Cup (remember, you are reading the official blog!). In the aftermath of the racist attempted murder that now no one any longer regards as racist. the German weekly Die Zeit has published an interesting video about "Spaces of Fear: Where black people in Berlin and Brandenburg do not dare to go." In the short documentary people of colour talk about their experience of racism in the Berlin-Brandenburg area, where a significant amount of places are off-limits for them. One of the interviewees from the Africa Council Berlin also talks about plans to publish an brochure and map for visitors of African origin of the soccer world cup that gives advice on "precautionary measures" to avoid becoming victims of racist violence during their visit.

The video (partly in English) is accompanied with a (German) interview of the urban sociologist Hartmut Häußermann. He discusses the situation in Berlin and possible counter-measures to no-go areas and everyday racism from an urban planning point of view.

Der Spielbericht über ein wüstes Fußballspiel? Eine wildgewordene Ampel? Nein, das Ergebnis des aktuellen Uni-Rankings des CHE für die Psychologie an der FU! Es ist schon interessant, wie allein die Tatsache, dass es die Ranglisten gibt, einen unwillkürlich dazu bringt, sie sich auch anzuschauen -- egal wie kritisch man Rankings im Allgemeinen und Bertelsmann/CHE im Besonderen auch gegenübersteht. Der Fachbereich, an den ich bald wieder zurückkehren werde, ist also angeblich in der Schlussgruppe in den Kategorien "Studiensituation gesamt", "Laboraustattung" und "Forschungsgelder" und damit einer der schlechtesten in Deutschland. Fachbereiche, die in mehr als drei Kategorien in die Spitzengruppe kommen, gibt es übrigens auch nicht.

Und die Moral von der Geschicht'?
Glaub dem Ranking -- oder nicht.

Guess what! There is more ridiculous news from my so-called fatherland. Not only do we have a minister of the interior who thinks insulting someone as "dirty nigger" does not hint at a racist crime. No! we also have an under-secretary of state (Staatssekretär, the highest rank for civil servants) who has some interesting thoughts on the open-source community and antifascism.

According to heise online, Joachim Wuermeling made the following statements on the celebration of World Intellectual Property Day (that there is such a day and high-ranking politicians like the secretary of justice attend to its celebration alone is enough to make me sick...) when he wanted to discredit opponents of software patent legislation on the European level:

Joachim Wuermeling, former member of the EU-parliament for the [conservative] Christian Social Union and correspondent in the debate about software patents, complained that a 'spiritual/intellectual [the German geistig can mean both] movement', that is 'connected to the realm of freaks' and has united with 'anti-fascism on the internet', has 'misled the medium-sized businesses (Mittelstand)'.

Maybe someone should remind this person that both the European Parliament and the German Bundestag have rejected the proposed patent legislation with large majorities. And that if we turn around his argument about freaky anti-fascists on the internet that oppose software patents proponents of these patents somehow must be ordinary fascists in the real world.

Oh! I am so much looking forward to returning to this country...

Fußball WM 2006

Dies ist das Fußball WM 2006-Blog!

Sie sind überrascht? Sie dachten, dass weder Hobbes noch Boyle Freunde des Sports oder gar des Fußballs sind? Dass die beiden im Gegenteil eher versuchen würden, allem was mit der kommenden Weltmeisterschaft zu tun hat, möglichst weiträumig aus dem Weg zu gehen? Im Prinzip schon, aber:

Bis gestern wäre es mir unmöglich gewesen, dieses Blog als "Fußball WM 2006-Blog" zu bezeichnen, selbst wenn ich ein großer Fußballfan wäre und gerne über irgendwelche Nationalmannschaften, anti-deutsche Hymnen oder sonst etwas WM-Relevantes hätte bloggen wollen. Warum? Aus dem einfachen Grund, dass die die WM austragende FIFA insgesamt für 850 Waren und Dienstleistungen "Fußball WM 2006" als Marke eintragen ließ. Und damit ein mächtiges Instrument in die Hand bekam, um all den FreundInnen und SponsorInnen der WM, die keine Lust hatten, Unsummen an den Verband zu zahlen, rechtlich an den Karren fahren zu können. Also hätte vermutlich auch mir mit einem "Fußball WM 2006-Blog" eine Unterlassungserklärung oder Schlimmeres gedroht.

Glücklicherweise jedoch wehrten sich einige Unternehmen gegen diesen markenrechtlichen Rundumschlag und beschwerten sich beim zuständigen Patent- und Markenamt. Diese löschte daraufhin zumindest einige der FIFA-Rechte, was diese sich allerdings wiederum nicht gefallen lassen wollte und vor Gericht zog. Vor dem Bundesgerichtshof wurde die Klage nun abgewiesen, da "Fußball WM 2006" keine einzigartige Marke sondern vielmehr ein allgemeiner sprachlicher Begriff sei, der von jedem und jeder -- und damit eben auch von mir! -- verwendet werden könne.

Um diesen Sieg gegen den markenrechtlichen Irrsinn, der das Publizieren im Internet immer mehr zu einem Vabanque-Spiel macht, zu feiern, widme ich mein Blog der Fußball WM 2006! Auch wenn mir von Fußball und WM immer noch herzlich egal sind.

Why do I always have to write about bad news here? Is it my German angst, is it only natural that I, a German student, am "usually not "begeistert"? Or is it maybe the state of the world in general and of Doitschland in particular? Judge for yourself:

On April 16, an Afro-German citizen was attacked by two men and one woman in the East-German city of Potsdam. Prior to the attack, the man tried to call his wife from his cell phone, got only her mailbox, and somehow he didn't hang up. Thus we have a recording of the racist insults (e.g. "Dirty nigger") that preceded the attack. The attack left the man severly wounded and he was put in an artificial coma, now still struggling for his life. So far, so terrible.

Immediately after the racist attempted murder became public there was a large outcry of concern and politicians from all over the spectrum condemned the attack. However, several observers suspected that some people might have been more concerned with Germany's reputation than with the racist crime itself, especially only a few weeks before the soccer world-cup will begin (slogan: "The world hosted by friends"). Attacks on foreigners (or those who are believed to be non-German) are not uncommon and this case is by no means unique.

The suspicion about the motives of politicians is furthered by the disgusting remarks of the German minister of the interior, Wolfgang Schäuble (Christian Democrats). In an interview with the public broadcaster Deutschlandradio Kultur four days after the attack he proclaimed: "We don't know about the motives, we don't know the offenders. We should be a bit careful." As if this was not enough, he then fantasized about poor Aryan victims: "Blond, blue-eyed people are also victims of violent crimes, partly even by offenders that possibly don't have the German citizenship. That is no better."

Mal wieder etwas zum leidigen Thema Vorratsdatenspeicherung. Heise berichtet, dass der Datenvorrat, den die EU anzulegen plant, nun wohl auch andere, US-amerikanische Datenhamster anlockt. Im Heise-Forum gibt zu dieser Meldung natürlich viel anti-amerikanischen Quatsch -- als ob es besser wäre, wenn nur Deutschland/die EU meine Verbindungsdaten ausspionierte! --, aber auch einen sehr schönen Musterbrief zur persönlichen Kündigung der EU-Mitgliedschaft:

hiermit kündige ich mit sofortiger Wirkung meine Zugehörigkeit auf.
Die Kündgiung erfolgt auf der grundlage der einseitigen

Alright, as announced, it is my great pleasure heed vegankid's call and Blog Against Sexism today. Since 1921 March 8 is the International Women's Day (from 1910 to 1921 it was called the International Socialist Women's Day and celebrated on March 19), a day for women and men (and everyone between these categories) alike to act and speak up against the still continuing violence against women, against their underrepresentation in politics, companies, and academia, against lower pay for women, against old and young boy's networks, against `harmless´ jokes, against exclusively male spaces, against condescending behavior, against fixed gender roles, against men not sharing the burden of housework, against objectification of women in media, culture, and science, against making women's work and achievements invisible, against pink for girls and blue for boys, against tough guys at hardcore shows. Unfortunately, this list is by no means complete but should nonetheless give you some idea why it is still fucking important to do something, not only on March 8, but on every day of every year. Period.

Sexism is not a woman-problem. It is my problem and it is yours. We all have to take up the fight against sexism, on all levels, at all times.

I've been planning this since the beginning but never had time, energy, or whatever to actually do it: a new layout for my blog. The templates that blogger offers are really nice but, of course, lacking personal touch. The new banner on top now has this personal touch as it reflects on the title of my blog and my blogger-name. Why this thing is called "Luftpumpen und andere Wesen" (air pumps and other beings) has been explained here (German only), and so you might recognize some of the actants: on the left we have Mr Thomas Hobbes, followed by the upper half of the frontispiece of his most famous book, Leviathan, Or the Matter, Forme, and Power of A Commonwealth Ecclesiasticall and Civil. In the middle we have a nice drawing of Otto von Guericke's early air pump model as illustrated by his colleague Gaspar Schott. Then comes one of Boyle's air pumps, followed by a portrait of the Honorary Sir Robert Boyle himself.
I must admit that I really like the new design but critical remarks are nonetheless ~~tolerated~~welcome.

A German student is not a pleasant companion, he is unclean, eats "Blut-und-Leber Wurst" and is usually not "begeistert." On the other hand, the English Undergrad is, as a rule clean, lives healthily and learns in a healthy fashion. The aesthetic ideal, mind and body combined, is on our side.

So der britische Mathematiker Karl Pearson in einem Brief vom 16. Januar 1880 an seinen Mentor Oscar Browning. Da Pearson von der intellektuellen Überlegenheit des neugegründeten Deutschlands überzeugt war, ging er nach seinem Studium in Cambridge für mehrere Monate nach Heidelberg und Berlin -- und war, wie obiges Zitat zeigt, not impressed.

Datenhamster

Seufz, obwohl ich mich im Dezember ja eigentlich schon exkulpiert hatte, will ich angesichts neuer Entwicklungen und auch Aktionsmöglichkeit ein paar Neuigkeiten zu den eifrigen Datenhamstern in EU und Doitschland posten. Nachdem am 21. Februar der EU-Rat der in meinem Dezember-Post diskutierten Vorlage des EU-Parlament ohne wesentliche Änderungen zugestimmt hat und auch Bundestag und -regierung mehrheitlich keine Probleme mit der Richtlinie haben, gab es heute ein interessantes Urteil des Bundesverfassungsgerichts über den Schutz von Verbindungsdaten und elektronischen Inhalten.

Das Urteil löste allgemein gespaltene Reaktionen aus -- einerseits wurde der Datenschutz geschwächt, da elektronische Kommunikation nur noch während der Übertragung vom strengen Fernmeldegeheimnis geschützt ist. Das heißt, wenn bei einer (richterlich angeordneten) Hausdurchsuchung E-Mails und Handy-Verbindungsdaten beschlagnahmt werden, ist dies -- zumindest solange die Verhältnismäßigkeit gewahrt bleibt, was im verhandelten Fall nicht so war -- rechtens. Ich finde das ehrlich gesagt auch halbwegs einleuchtend, da man sich bei einem Brief, der bei einem zuhause herumliegt, ja auch nicht auf das Postgeheimnis berufen kann. Und abgesehen davon sah die Praxis der Strafverfolgung eh nie anders aus.

Das Positive an der Entscheidung liegt nun andererseits darin, dass eine Verwertung der Verbindungsdaten während der Übertragung, also genau der von der Vorratsdatenspeicherung erfasste Sachverhalt, vorsichtig kritisch bewertet wurde. So sahen sich sowohl KritikerInnen als auch BefürworterInnen der VDS in ihren Ansichten eher bestätigt -- das Urteil ist also definitiv nicht das letzte Wort in dieser Angelegenheit.

Wer sich in der Angelegenheit nicht auf die blinde Justitia verlassen will und noch Vertrauen in das Instrument der Petition hat, sollte sich dringend als UnterstützerIn bei dieser Petition an den Bundestag eintragen (momentan 10 685 Zeichende). Ich finde die Begründung zwar ziemlich lasch und die Erfolgsaussichten zweifelhaft, aber besser als Nichtstun ist es allemal ...

Ach ja, Verschlüsselung von E-Mails, Festplatten und was einem sonst noch so einfällt ist natürlich auch eine sehr gute Idee! Und heutzutage auch nicht mehr so furchtbar kompliziert.

Lang nichts mehr geschrieben, und auch dieser Eintrag ist nur ein kurzer Hinweis auf interessante Literatur:

In der Telepolis gibt es einen ganz interessanten Artikel über die Einschränkung der Meinungsfreiheit nicht durch staatliche Zensur, sondern durch die "Religion des geistigen Eigentums". Ein Zitat:

"Würden Moslems ihren Propheten als Markenzeichen eintragen, hätten sie gute Chancen, die Karikaturen sofort und fast überall qua WTO und andere internationale Organe zu unterbinden."

Ich fand die vielen Beispiele erschrecken, in denen es Privatpersonen, Firmen oder Organisationen gelingt, die Äußerung missliebiger Meinungen und Inhalte durch den Verweis auf geistiges Eigentum und einen Haufen schmutziger Tricks im ach so freien Internet zu unterbinden. Wie weit der Begriff der "Religion des geistigen Eigentums", den Peter Mühlbauer unter Hinweis auf eine funktionalistische Konzeption von Religion, wie sie in der Ethnologie entwickelt wurde, sei einmal dahingestellt, aber die Lektüre des Artikels lohnt sich auf jeden Fall.

Exzellenz und 21 Millionen

Wer es noch nicht gehört hat: die gute alte FU hat es in die zweite Runde des berüchtigten Exzellenzwettbewerbs aka Brain Up! Deutschland sucht die Superuni geschafft. Entgegen dem Urteil der meisten Auguren, die die FU wohl eher abgeschrieben haben. Sollte(!) die FU auch noch die zweite Runde überstehen, bekäme sie im Jahr zusätzliche Mittel im Umfang von 21 Millionen Euro. Fichtenberg hat sich das einmal genauer angeschaut und kommt zu einem recht vernichtenden Urteil: 21 Millionen seien eh nur ein Tropfen auf den heißen Stein und abgesehen davon würden die Mittel dann vermutlich auch noch nutzlos für überbezahlte Profs ausgegeben.

Ich sehe das durchaus differenzierter: zum einen sind 21 Millionen pro Jahr immerhin mehr als 7 Prozent der Mittel, die das Land Berlin an die FU bezahlt. Ob man damit nun das "Oxford in Dahlem" schafft, mag mit gutem Recht bezweifelt werden, unerheblich ist die Summe aber nicht. Außerdem ist die FU ja noch mit einem Exzellenzcluster und einer Graduiertenschule in den anderen Förderlinien des Wettbewerbs im Rennen.

Zum anderen ist natürlich wirklich die Frage, wozu man das Geld einsetzt. Grundsätzlich finde ich es nicht verwerflich, sich um internationales Spitzenpersonal zu bemühen. Die Behauptung von Fichtenberg, dass deutsche Profs nicht unterbezahlt seien, teile ich so pauschal nicht. Im europäischen Vergleich mögen sich die deutschen ja durchaus im oberen Bereich befinden, aber ob man deswegen gut finden muss, dass gerade NeueinsteigerInnen weniger verdienen als ihre Kollegen an Schulen und Gerichten? Angesichts der langen, brotlosen Ausbildung und des damit einhergehenden Risikos, die mit der Entscheidung für die Prof-Laufbahn verbunden ist, finde ich eine angemessene Bezahlung durchaus gerechtfertigt.

Außerdem:

Ist der Prof aus Harvard (bzw. der, der nach Harvard abzuwanden droht) wirklich um so viel Klassen besser als der aus Buxtehude?

Vielleicht. Wenn ich mir das Lehrpersonal hier so anschaue und mit dem an der FU vergleiche, würde ich auf jeden Fall zu einem "Ja" tendieren. Ein wichtiger Faktor ist dabei übrigens nicht eine prinzipielle Überlegenheit des amerikanischen Hochschulsystems, sondern zu einem großen Teil sicherlich das überkommenen Berufungsverfahren in Deutschland. Die Austrockung des akademischen Mittelbaus, die unterhalb der Professur praktisch keine dauerhaften Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten eröffnet, verschärft die Situation sicher noch.

Statt einen überbezahlten Prof könnte man auch fünf "normalbezahlte" einstellen - und/oder Bücher anschaffen, Räumlichkeiten ausbauen, Laptops bereitstellen.

Fünf normale für eine Elite? So gut wird das Personal hier in der Regel auch nicht bezahlt. Die Frage, ob man das Geld lieber für (Spitzen-)Profs ausgibt oder für Bücher, Räume und Laptops verliert dadurch aber nicht an Relevanz. Ich maße mir keine allgemeinverbindliche Antwort an, aber was vielleicht zu bedenken ist, dass es hochqualifiziertem Personal besser gelingen könnte, diejenigen zusätzlichen Drittmittel einwerben zu können, mittels derer man eben diese Materialien anschaffen könnte. Ja, ich bin ein vielleicht ein naiver Optimist, aber ob es besser ist, mit einem Laptop in einem überfüllten Seminar bei einem lausigen Prof zu sitzen als ohne...?

Wer gerade den Washingtoner Zoo besucht, könnte meinen, dort lebten nur drei schwarz-weiß gefleckte, pelzige und überaus süüße Tiere, nämlich die Pandas Mei Xiang, Tian Tian und der gerade erst sechs Monate alte Tai Shan. Dem ist natürlich nicht so, aber wer sich einen Eindruck von der dort grassierenden Pandamie machen will, sollte sich mein Panda-Mania-Set bei Flickr anschauen. Kostproben gibt es hier.

Also: damit es nachher nicht heißt, ich hätte nichts gesagt, muss ich hier dringend meine Meinung zu den neuesten Anti-Datenschutzschweinereien kundtun, die die kürzlich erwähnte Verfügung zur Zensurpflicht bei Forenbeiträgen in ihrer Gefährlichkeit noch deutlich in den Schatten stellen.

Wer es noch nicht mitbekommen hat (die Berichterstattung in deutschen Nicht-Internet-Medien muss wohl irgendwo zwischen "unterirdisch" und "nicht vorhanden" rangiert haben): das EU-Parlament hat einen Beschluss zur massiven Ausweitung der Vorratsdatenspeicherung gefasst. Das heißt, sämtliche Verbindungsdaten von Telefon- und Internetverbindungen sollen in Zukunft für mindestens 6, gerne aber auch bis zu 24 Monaten von den Providern gespeichert werden und den Ermittlungsbehörden zugänglich sein. Diese erhoffen sich -- wer hätte es gedacht? -- wundersame Erfolge gegen den guten alten Terrorismus. Widerstand gab es im Parlament wohl nur bei den üblichen Verdächtigen, die aber mit 387:204 eine deutliche Niederlage gegen eine große Koalition der Datenkraken erlitten. Außerparlamentarisch gab es starken Widerstand vor allem von Vertretern der Provider, die in vielen Staaten vermutlich selbst für die Kosten der Speicherung aufkommen müssen, und diversen Datenschutzanhängern.

Routine distribution of alcoholic beverages to mental hospital patients would be a fanciful prospect today, yet in the formative decades of lunatic asylums, beer was standard issue. A staple item in the supposedly healthy Victorian asylum diet, beer also served as inducement for patient labour. Around the mid-1880s, this commodity was abolished throughout Britain’s mental institutions. This paper explores the factors that combined to condemn the beer barrel to asylum history, and, in particular, how this small comfort for inmates fell foul of the medicalization of the asylum and of the professional project of psychiatry.

Zensur

Im Rahmen des World Summit on the Information Society bekam die Zensur des Internets wieder einmal erhöhte Aufmerksamkeit. Die Assoziation, die sich dabei einstellt, sind vermutlich erst einmal chinesische Schergen, die in Hinterhof-Internetcafés bloggende Dissidenten verhaften oder die anonyme Zensur über diverse Filtersysteme.

Doch auch in Deutschland ist die Informationsfreiheit prekär, wie nicht zuletzt eine Entscheidung des Hamburger Landgerichts zeigt. Dort wurde eine einstweilige Verfügung bestätigt, "nach der es heise online verboten ist, Forenbeiträge zu verbreiten, in denen dazu aufgerufen wird, durch den massenhaften Download eines Programms den Server-Betrieb eines Unternehmens zu stören. Der Heise Zeitschriften Verlag wird damit faktisch gezwungen, sämtliche Beiträge zu den Diskussionsforen im Vorhinein auf diesen Rechtsverstoß hin zu überprüfen." Sollte dieses Urteil Bestand haben (heise legt Rechtsmittel ein), wäre das der Tod praktisch sämtlicher Forensysteme und auch der Kommentarfunktionen bei Blogs. Meinereiner könnte die zwei Kommentare pro Monat ja im Prinzip noch von Hand vor der Veröffentlichung prüfen, aber ab einem bestimmten Aufkommen (heise hat wohl 220 000 Postings/Monat) ist das natürlich unmöglich.

As some of us are either too young to actually own the old stuff and/or don't have the money to pay 50+$ for some 7inch, there is still hope. Die Zeit vor Weihnachten hat eine Vielzahl übler Begleiterscheinungen wie grausliche Musik im Supermarkt, überfüllte Lden, schlechtes Wetter usw. usf. Umso mehr freut es mich, etwas Positives über die Adventszeit berichten zu können: Sie beschert uns nämlich ein Blog von Sven Regener, bekannt als Sänger von Element of Crime und Autor wunderbarer Bücher über Frank Lehmann. Wer die Bücher kennt, wird sich schon denken können, was ihn erwartet, und alle anderen sollten die Gelegenheit schleunigst nutzen, Regener kennenzulernen.

Nur eine klitzekleine Anmerkung zur Lage in Frankreich: Ich war mehr als überrascht, als ich einige Tage nach Beginn der Ausschreitungen (sie hatten sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits über das ganze Land ausgebreitet) in der Tagesschau hörte, wieviele Polizisten zur Eindämmung der Krawalle im Einsatz waren. 8000! Während ich mich zuvor noch gefragt hatte, wie es den Kids gelingen konnte, ein solches Ausmaß der Zerstörung zu erreichen, wurde mir angesichts jener Zahl einiges klar. Zur Veranschaulichung für mit Polizeitaktik weniger Vertraute: 8000 ist genau die Zahl an Cops, die 2004 am 1. Mai in Berlin im Einsatz waren. Ja -- allein in Berlin! Sehr seltsam, diese offensichtliche Fehleinschätzung der Lage.

Blogger scheint nun endlich endlich Trackbacks eingeführt zu haben. Zufällig bin ich bei den Einstellungen auf die Option "Backlinks aktivieren" gestoßen und der Hilfetext klingt eigentlich so, als ob sich um eine Trackback-Funktion handelt. So ganz sicher bin ich mir allerdings nicht, und Google hat oft die schlechte Angewohnheit, auf neue Features nicht hinzuweisen. Vielleicht ist es noch Beta? Oder ich muss meine Vorlage ändern (der Link zur Anleitung ist leider tot)? Warten wir mal ab, vielleicht funktioniert es ja auch.

Addendum: Es ist tatsächlich etwas anderes als Trackback. Aber auch nicht schlecht, denke ich. Und ich muss meine Vorlage nicht von Hand ändern.

Die Währung der Bildung

Der TransatlanTicker hat auf die Daumenregel des DAAD bei der Umrechnung von US- in ECTS-credits hingewiesen. Für einen US-c soll man zwei ECTS-c bekommen.

Da ich diese Umrechnung intuitiv als schief empfand, habe ich folgende Berechnungen angestellt:

Ein Cornell-Seminar hat dieses Semester 14 Sitzungen á 115 Minuten, ein deutsches Seminar ebenfalls etwa 14 Sitzungen á 90 Minuten. Damit kommt man in Cornell auf knapp 27h, in D auf 21h. Für ein Hauptseminar mit benotetem Schein bekommt man in D wohl 7 Credits [1], hier gibt es für ein Graduate-Seminar 4 credits, die nach oben genannter Formel 8 Euro-Credits wert wären. Wenn man nun davon ausgeht, dass die Vor- und Nachbereitungszeit + Hausarbeit in D und US gleich sind (was natürlich nicht stimmt) , käme man in D auf 0,33 credits/h, in US auf 0,30 credits/h.

Fazit: Die Umrechnung ist besser als erwartet, zumindest wenn man in D nicht vom realen Durchschnittsaufwand außerhalb der eigentlichen Lehrveranstaltung ausgeht, sondern von einem fleißigen, aber nicht zu schnellen Studierenden. Erhöhte man den Umrechnungsfaktor auf 2,5, ergäbe sich ein credit/h-Verhältnis von 0,33(D) zu 0,37(US), was ich angemessener fände. Aber ist ja auch nur eine Daumenregel.

Dieser Eintrag ist eigentlich eine Notiz an mich, damit ich das Projekt nicht aus den Augen verliere. Das Projekt ist eine Kompilation der raren (das macht es realisierbar), aber dafür zumeist umso skurrileren (das macht es erstrebenswert) Beispiele im Werk Niklas Luhmanns.

Wenn man sich an einer amerikanischen Elitehochschule wie Stanford bewirbt, scheint die Tugend der Bescheidenheit jedenfalls nicht sehr verbreitet zu sein. Kostprobe gefällig?

Leider weiß ich nicht, ob die Bewerbung erfolgreich. Ich bin dieses Meisterwerks vermittels eines Artikels (leider nicht frei zugänglich) über die Kovariation von Textkomplexität und Einschätzung der Intelligenz des Autors habhaft geworden. (Methodisch zweifelhaftes) Ergebnis der Studie ist, dass komplexere Texte zu einer niedrigeren Intelligenzschätzung führen. Der Artikel selbst hat übrigens selbst noch eine (absichtliche?) Stilblüte gleich im Titel zu bieten: "Consequences of Erudite Vernacular Utilized Irrespective of Necessity: Problems with Using Long Words Needlessly". Welche Intelligenzschätzung sich der Autor, Daniel M. Oppenheimer, damit wohl verdient hat?

Donna Summer...

... ist nicht nur der Name einer Discoqueen, sondern auch das Pseudonym von Jason Forrest. Ich war schon 2004 durch einen Zeitungsartikel auf ihn aufmerksam geworden und habeDonna Summer auf der Fusion dann auch live gesehen. Dort war ich nur mittelmäßig beeindruckt und sein Album fand ich zwar recht gut, aber auch nicht umwerfend. Durch einen neuerlichen Artikel, diesmal in der Zeit, stieß ich auf die Website seiner Sendung beim New Yorker Sender WFMU und ich kann sie nur wärmstens empfehlen! Es gibt sämtliche Sendungen als Stream inclusive Playlists. Musikalisch wird ein breites Spektrum von Elektronika aller Provenienz geboten -- verhackstückte Disco-Songs, Gabber-Genüppel, Breakcore, abgefahrene Remixe, House usw. Die Platten und CDs ercheinen in der Regel auf obskuren Mini-Labels oder werden Herrn Summer von den Künstlern (Frauen scheinen rar im genre zu sein) auf CD-R zugeschickt. Ich höre heute schon den ganzen Tag archivierte Shows und stoße immer wieder auf neue Perlen (wo findet man sonst schon Deathmetal-Grindcore mit einem Papagei am Gesang?)

Forrest lebt inzwischen übrigens in meiner alten Heimat Berlin.

Kürzlich habe ich hier über die Plagiatsproblematik an deutschen Hochschulen berichtet. Auf SpiegelOnline wird heute über die drastischen Maßnahmen der Uni Münster berichtet. Mir ist allerdings vollkommen unklar, warum man auch auf Geldbußen als Sanktion zurückgreift. Ist der Ausschluss von weiteren Prüfungen nicht eine hinreichende Drohung? Außerdem haben Geldbußen immer das Problem, dass sie sozial selektiv wirken (bei 50 000 Euro relativiert sich das allerdings wieder etwas...).

Ja, ich weiß: ich schreibe hier immer nur über alten Kram. Und oft auch über schlechten. Für ersteres bin natürlich ich selbst schuld, für zweiteres kann ich jedoch definitiv nichts.

Also mal wieder etwas über einen schlechten Film, nämlich Gary Ross' Seabiscuit. Wie die Zeit berichtet, war Ross wohl Redenschreiber für Bill Clinton und das merkt man. Der ganze Film ist voller Pathos, "jeder kann es schaffen, wenn er nur darum kämpft", "wir Amerikaner haben eine zweite Chance verdient", blablabla. Die Charaktere passen in ihrer Holzschnittartigkeit hervorragend zu diesen Platitüden: der unerträglich sympathische Underdog Tobey Maguire, der altmodisch-rätselhafte Pferdeflüsterer, der erfolgreiche Vater-Geschäftsmann, der alles in seinen Traum investiert, die sich modern kleidende, aber letztlich doch nur gutaussehend herumstehende Ehefrau, der schwarze Pferdeknecht, der auf etwa sechs Zeilen Dialog bekommt usw usf. Auch die (zugegebenermaßen gut gemachten) Bilder von schwitzenden Pferdeleibern, Rennfans mit Hut und ähnlichem runden den Eindruck ab. Wenn man die Botschaft gut findet, wird man diesen Film vermutlich lieben, ansonsten ist er nur schwer erträglich.

While reading an article about collaboration of science museums I came across a strange economical fact: You could not buy a robot dinosaur model at 1996. This fact (btw: meaning the end of one long-year museum cooperation), seems to be quite contradictory to what I know about economy, both in a mainstream and in a Marxist understanding. The authors of the article claimed that manufacturers of the dinosaurs based their business on leasing fees but this does not explain why it is not possible to buy a model---the manufacturers shouldn't care too much if they get their money in one payment or over some years. I really cannot make sense of this story, and I'd be really interested if there are other products that are commodified in this strange way.

PS During my research on this topic I found out that the Natural History Museum in London became a retailer (yes, now they also the stuff) for dino-models. Modern capitalism is really complicated...

Bei Telepolis gibt es einen interessanten Artikel von Stefan Weber zum Wuchern des Plagiierens, sowohl im universitäten Kontext als auch bei der Wikipedia. Die Zahlen von 15--20 Prozent scheinen mir durchaus realistisch zu sein, was sicherlich auch mit dem laxen Vorgehen deutscher Universitäten zu tun hat. Ein befreundeter Dozent, dem man ein Plagiat als Hausarbeit eingereicht hatte (Erkennungsmerkmal: "das war zu gut formuliert"), ließ es mit der Aufforderung, das ganze doch bitte abzuändern, bewenden; und die zweite Version unterschied sich auch nur marginal von der ersten...

Hier in den USA ist zumindest die Politik der Universitäten deutlich
konsequenter: Alle Studierenden (und Angestellten) verpflichten sich,
einen "Code of Integrity" einzuhalten und Verstöße
können bis zu einem Nichtbestehen des Kurses führen (was hier eine
recht drastische Maßnahme ist, da man in vielen Graduate-Kursen keine
failed courses haben darf, um zum Abschluss zugelassen zu werden). Wie die Handhabung in der Praxis aussieht, kann ich nicht einschätzen.

Ich habe mir die "Elefantenrunde" gerade im Livestream bei Phoenix angeschaut und der obige Post im Heise-Forum trifft es voll. Wobei er eher wie vollgekokst und nicht wie bekifft wirkte. Wer zum Teufel hat dem armen Bundeskanzler etwas ins Glas gekippt??

Ernstnehmen kann man diesen Wahlquark jedenfalls nicht (welch Überraschung). In diesem Sinne muss ich also nicht nur vom kleineren Übel kotzen.

Was ich übrigens spannender finde als das widerliche Gebaren von Schröder et al., ist das offensichtliche Versagen der Meinungsforschungsinstitute. Die Erklärung, dass sich die Leute eben erst am Samstag oder Sonntag entschlossen haben, finde ich ein wenig billig. Man müsste sich einmal Studien ansehen, die untersuchen, wann Leute ihre Entscheidung treffen und ob die "Last-Minute"-Wählerinnen und -Wähler wirklich so massiv zugenommen haben.

Old Boy

Eigentlich hatte ich geplant, jetzt nach meinem Kinonbesuch, in der Bib zu sitzen und noch ein wenig meine heutige Seitenbilanz aufzubessern. Nach dem Genuss(?) von Oldboy habe ich mich aber kurzfristig umentschieden -- dieser Film von Chan-wook Park hat mich doch zu sehr mitgenommen. Ich hatte zum Start in Deutschland schon einige sehr positive Kritiken gelesen, in denen aber auch vor den sehr expliziten Gewaltszenen gewarnt wurde. Ich bin in dieser Hinsicht sowieso eher zart besaitet und hatte dementsprechend die Befürchtung, mir während des ganzen Filmes die Augen zuhalten zu müssen. Dem war zum Glück nicht so: Zähneausbrechen in Großaufnahme und ähnliches nimmt nur einen kleinen Teil des Filmes ein. Dennoch ist Gewalt, blind zuschlagende, nicht erklärbare Gewalt das Kernelement der Geschichte, die ich an dieser Stelle nicht nacherzählen will. Der Film ist eine eindeutige Empfehlung, man sollte sich eben nur nichts danach vornehmen.

ADHS und Risiko

Wer sich für das Thema Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit-(Hyperaktivitäts-)Störung interessiert, kann seit heute eine kleine Site zu einem unter anderem von meiner Wenigkeit durchgeführten Projekt finden. Auf der Basis von fünf ausführlichen Interviews (teilweise auf der Seite veröffentlicht), wird dort der Frage nachgegangen, ob sich für von AD(H)S Betroffene eine wahrgenommene Unsicherheit ergibt, etwa über Folgen der Medikation oder die Sicherheit der Diagnose, und wie sie damit umgehen. Nichts Weltbewegendes, aber ich finde die Perspektive der Betroffenen in Interviewform recht spannend.

Batman Ends --- zumindest für mich

Angelockt vom reduzierten Eintrittspreis von 2 Dollar, habe ich mir gestern Batman Begins angeschaut. Ich will gar nicht viel darüber schreiben, aber es war der schlechteste Film, den ich seit langem gesehen habe. Während ich den alten Batman von Tim Burton wegen seiner hübschen Comic-Ästethik recht nett fand, ist bei Batman Begins jeglicher Charme verloren gegangen. Übrig geblieben ist ein Elend plumper Action-Film, der dazu auch noch langweilig ist. Die Kampf-Szenen sind mit ihren zu schnellen Schnitten ebenfalls uninspirierend und ja: der Film endet damit, dass Batman und seine Jugendfreundin endlich zueinander finden. Würg.

Darstellen und Eingreifen

Nachdem meine Postingaktivitaet in letzter Zeit -- ganz gemäß meinem Lebensfokus -- sich auf die Odyssee beschränkt hat, will ich mir nun wieder Zeit nehmen, hier ein etwas umfangreicheres Update zu veröffentlichen. Grund ist, dass ich endlich dazu gekommen bin, Ian Hackings Einfuehrung in die Philosophie der Naturwissenschaften zu Ende zu lesen. Um es gleich vorwegzunehmen: Unbedingt lesen! Alle, die irgendetwas mit Naturwissenschaft, Wissenschaftsgeschichte oder Philosophie am Hut haben, können von diesem Buch nur profitieren.

Die Entscheidung, mir das Buch zu kaufen, hatte ich nach einem begeisternden Vortrag von Hacking im Rahmen der Abschlusskonferenz des virtuellen Labors am MPI für Wissenschaftsgeschichte getroffen. Der Titel des Buches mag für jemanden, die oder der sich schon eingehender mit Wissenschaftsphilosophie beschäftigt hat, vielleicht auf den ersten Blick etwas abschreckend wirken -- auch ich hatte die Befuerchtung, mich bei einer "Einführung" deshäufigeren zu langweilen, doch davon kann gar keine Rede sein! Hacking selbst schreibt treffend:

Mit "einführend" ist hier allerdings nicht "vereinfacht" gemeint. Einführende Themen sollten klar genug und wictig genug sein, um denjenigen, für den sie neu sind, zu fesseln. Außerdem sollten sie widerborstig genug sein, um bei den Lesern, die seit Jahren über diese Gegenstände nachgedacht haben, noch manchen Funken zu entzünden. (9)

Inhaltlich gliedert sich das Buch in zwei Teile, die für Hacking die beiden Tätigkeitsbereich von WissenschaftlerInnen sind: "Darstellen" und "Eingreifen". Der erste Teil gibt dabei einen umfassenden Überblick über die grundlegenden Probleme und Lösungsvorschläge in der Wissenschaftstheorie mit einem Fokus auf der zentralen Frage des Realismus und seiner KritikerInnen.

Für Hacking untrennbar verknüpft mit der Frage der Wissenschaftstheorie sind Fragen der wissenschaftlichen Praxis, also des Eingreifens. Hacking konzentriert sich bei seiner Darstellung in zweiten Teil auf einige paradigmatische Probleme wie die des "Sehens", des Messens oder der Beobachtung und behandelt diese anhand genauer historiografischer Darstellung. Immer wieder gelingt es ihm hierbei, "die großen Männer" der Wissenschaftsforschung historischer Fehler zu überführen; dadurch werden zugleich verzerrte Darstellungen wissenschaftlicher Tätigkeit und unhaltbare theoretische Postulate über Wissenschaft überzeugend kritisiert.

Während des ganzen Textes vertritt Hacking klar und durch Argumente gestützte seine eigene Form des wissenschaftlichen Realismus, die er in folgendem Satz konzentriert: "Was mich betrifft, gilt: Wenn man sie versprühen kann, sind sie real." (47)

Die deutsche Übersetzung ist weitestgehend als gelungen zu bezeichnen. Über die Frage, ob man "representing" mit "darstellen" angemessen wiedergibt, ließe sich sicher vortreffllich streiten, ansonsten gibt es jedoch kaum Grund zur Kritik. Auch das Lektorat und der Satz sind lobend hervorzuheben, vor allem angesichts des unschlagbaren Reclam-Preises von 9,60 Euro.

Nach all diesem Lob noch ein paar kleine Kritikpunkte: Jenseits der sprachlichen Brillianz des Textes, drängte sich mir an vielen Stellen der Wunsch nach Abbildungen auf. Nicht, dass man die Modelle, Beispiele etc. nicht auch ohne Visualisierung verstehen könnte, aber gerade in einem Einführungsbuch wäre es eine schöne Erweiterung gewesen. Eine wertvolle Zugabe, die Hacking liefert, ist die schoene, kommentierte Bibliografie am Ende des Bandes. Diese ist kapitelbezogen sortiert und ziemlich knapp gehalten , was ich eher fuer einen Vorteil halte. An dieser Stelle noch ein Hinweis für alle Latourianer: Wer auf einen Verweis Hackings auf Bruno Latour und die Actor-Network Theory wartet, muss sich sehr lange gedulden: Erst auf der letzten Seite der Bibliografie findet sich ein Hinweis auf dessen Arbeiten, allerdings ohne Erklärung, warum dieser im restlichen Buch unter den Tisch gefallen ist.

Das Thema des "neuen Internets" ist in deutschen Medien gerade anscheinend sehr en vogue: Auch Die Zeit hat einen Artikel zum Thema; in diesem erfährt man allerdings nichts Neues, wenn man die beiden unten kommentierten Technology Review-Artikel gelesen hat. Die im ersten Absatz angesprochene Frage einer möglichen "digitalen Spaltung zweiter Ordnung" zwischen denjenigen, die soziale Software einsetzen und denjenigen, die dies nicht tun, wird leider nicht vertieft.

GoogleTalk ist da!

Nachdem es vor zwei Tagen ja schon erste Gerüchte gab, ist GoogleTalk seit heute online. Die Beschreibungen klingen vielversprechend und ich bin gespannt, es auszuprobieren. Wer Lust hat, kann mich unter meinem kliems@gmail.com-Account erreichen, Text und Voice. Mal schauen, ob die Audioqualität an Skype heranreicht (und ich vielleicht mit weniger Verzögerung mit L telefonieren kann).

Soziale (?) Maschinen

In der aktuellen Technology Review ist eine Art follow-up zum weiter unten kommentierten Artikel "Das Web sind wir" erschienen. Unter dem Titel "Soziale Maschinen" geht Wade Roush auch auf die Hardware-Komponente des "neuen" Webs ein. Durch die Verfügbarkeit von Geräten wie Smartphones und WLAN-Laptops, durch die Verfügbarkeit der Informationen und Dienste des Internet an beinahe jedem Ort zu jeder Zeit seien neue Kommunikationsformen und (das ist meine Deutung im Wittgenstein'schen Sinne) auch Lebensformen entstanden. Entgegen dem ursprünglichen (und gescheiterten) Plan, Computer unsichtbar und auf diesem Wege sozialverträglicher zu machen, sei es heute kein Problem mehr, eine Armada von Geräten mit sich herumzuschleppen, solange man mit diesen nur auf das "neue Web" zugreifen könne. Eine weitere wichtige Rolle würde hierbei die zunehmende Verbreitung lokalisierter Dienste spielen, etwa die Bereitstellung von Informationen anhand des Aufenthaltsortes der Benutzerin oder des Benutzer. Selbst die Prognose der als nächstes erfolgenden Tätigkeit sei heute bereits in den Bereich des Möglichen gerückt:

Ein Telefon, das Terminkalender und Aufenthaltsort berücksichtigt, könnte beispielsweise erkennen, dass Sie nach dem Café immer ins Büro gehen, und schon mal beginnen, Ihre E-Mails und Nachrichten auf dem Anrufbeantworter aus dem Internet zu ziehen, während Sie noch Ihren Café Latte schlürfen.

Oder, um es etwas überspitzt zu formulieren: Nachdem Sie sich für 15 Stunden in Ihrem Büro aufgehalten haben, könnte das Handy schon einmal automatisch die Upper und Antidepressiva nach Hause bestellen.

An dieser Stelle setzt auch meine Kritik an: Der Artikel hebt vor allem hervor, wie sehr durch die neuen technologischen Möglichkeiten "unsere" Produktivität gesteigert worden sei, wie wir neue soziale Netzwerke geschaffen hätten, die neue Formen der Kollaboration ermöglicht haben. Die These von der gesteigerten Produktivität sollte relativ einfach zu überprüfen sein, und genau dies, eine genaue empirische Untersuchung, hielte ich für notwendig -- wie die in den ersten Abschnitten von Roush beschriebenen Kontroverse um die Zulassung von WLAN während eines Meetings (Ablenkung versus Möglichkeit der Informationsbeschaffung) andeutet, ist die Lage weniger eindeutig als das im Artikel mitschwingt.

Grundlegendere Fragen, die keine schnellen Antworten haben, aber dafür spannende Themen einer kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Untersuchung wären (Notiz an mich: im Hinterkopf behalten!), sind etwa: Von wem spricht Roush eigentlich in dem Artikel? Vielleicht nur von jungen, gebildeten, erfolgreichen IT-Fachleuten, Online-Journalisten, Manager in den westlichen Metropolen? Welche Auswirkungen haben die Technologien auf "die anderen"? Wenn Roush vom "sozialen Web" spricht: Welche Form der Sozialität wird hier kreiert? Welche Auswirkungen hat dies auf Identität(en)? Welche Interaktionen zwischen Sozialität und Technologie ergeben sich und wie werden die erstgenannten dadurch verändert (Stichworte: Hybriden und Monster)?

Back in the days, als man Musikfernsehen noch schauen konnte (wie haben sich die Sender eigentlich vor der Klingeltonwerbung finanziert?), gab es MTV Sushi, eine Sendung von und mit Stefan Kretzschmar. Die Sendung selbst war eher mittelmäßig, es gab aber immer eine sehr nette Rubrik namens Haircrimes, in denen heiße Metal-Videos aus den 80ern samt der dazugehörigen Verbrechen gegen die Frisierkunst vorgestellt wurden. Etwas Ähnliches gibt es nun auch im Netz, nämlich http://www.fiese-scheitel.de/ Der Name ist Programm, die ganze Palette der Haarverbrechen ist vertreten, vom Nackenschoner über Vokuhilas, skurille Schnauzbart-Variationen bis hin zu Steckdosen-Style-Langmatten ...
